What Malala’s Words Reminded Me Of

Today marks the end of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid for Muslim families in Kibera and around the world. Many KGSA students, staff, and families observe Ramadan, making this week a special moment of reflection and celebration in our school community.

Recently, I was reading Malala Yousafzai’s new book, Finding My Way, and one passage felt especially familiar:
It’s so exciting to know that tomorrow morning a child is going to wake up, put on her uniform, and go to class. And in a few years, she will be the very first girl to ever graduate from high school in these villages. Can you imagine it? I beamed, so proud to tell him about my work. If I accomplished nothing else in my life except helping these girls to graduate from high school, I would be happy.”

When I read those words, I immediately thought about the girls at the Kibera Girls Soccer Academy, because that is exactly what is happening here, too.

Every morning, 150 girls wake up at KGSA, put on their uniforms, and head to class. Many of them will be the first girls in their families to complete high school.

That milestone changes everything. It means new opportunities, new confidence, and new possibilities not just for the girl herself, but for her family and community.

What Malala describes is not limited to Pakistan. It is happening in Kenya. It is happening in communities around the world. Together, we are part of a much larger movement to ensure that girls everywhere have the opportunity to learn, lead, and shape their own futures.

And because of you, KGSA is part of that movement.
