Madaraka Day: The power of giving back

Today in Kenya, people across the country are celebrating Madaraka Day – a national holiday marking Kenya’s journey toward self-governance and independence. “Madaraka” is the Swahili word for “power” or “responsibility.” It’s a day of reflection on Kenyan history, heritage and the sacrifices made for freedom.

And at the Kibera Girls Soccer Academy, it’s also a reminder that education gives girls the power to shape their own futures and the responsibility to lift others along the way. That spirit is on full display at KGSA.

Through the support of our partner Global Give Back Circle, many KGSA girls have received mentorship, guidance, and college scholarship opportunities over the years. Recently, our current students had the chance to hear from someone who once sat exactly where they sit today: Janet, a KGSA alumna from the Class of 2022. Now, Janet has returned not just as an alumna, but as a mentor, role model, and big sister.

Seeing former students come back to pour into the next generation is one of the most beautiful reminders of what KGSA stands for. This is more than a school. It is a community of girls and women who continue showing up for each other long after graduation day. That is the power of sisterhood. That is the spirit of giving back. And that is why KGSA will always be a family.

Thank you to the Global Give Back Circle for continuing to inspire, encourage, and uplift our girls through mentorship and opportunity.
