| As Term One at the Kibera Girls Soccer Academy (KGSA) begins to wind down, we’re already seeing the impact of welcoming 60 new Form 2 girls into our school community this January. Today I’d love to introduce you to one of those sophomore girls: Vivian Adongo. Vivian is 15 years old and lives in Kibera with her sister. She comes from a large family of eight siblings. Her parents live up-country where her father farms and her mother, now older, is no longer able to work. With so many children to support, continuing school was not easy. When she learned about KGSA through her sister’s friend, her family encouraged her to apply. Many people in the community know KGSA as a free boarding high school where girls’ lives are transformed. Her sister didn’t want Vivian to miss that opportunity. |

| Vivian joined KGSA on January 22 and quickly settled into her new life. Two of her favorite things so far are the meals and the dormitories. After spending her first night in the dorm, she said she felt happy and welcomed by the other girls. In the classroom, she especially enjoys science, business, computer studies, and mathematics. One day she hopes to become a nurse so she can care for people when they are sick and help them receive treatment. This term, she also joined something brand new at KGSA. Principal Mondestah and Teacher Lilian launched the school’s first Book Club alongside three volunteers from Colorado who visited earlier this year and were excited to help the girls discover the joy of reading for pleasure. Watching the girls gather together to talk about books, share ideas, and build confidence in their voices has been a wonderful addition to school life this term. Here’s what changed because of you: A girl whose family could not afford high school fees is now thriving in her first term at KGSA. Vivian is just getting started. |
