STEM Volunteers in Kibera

Last week, something special happened at the Kibera Girls Soccer Academy.  Fifteen STEM professionals, from engineers and finance to educators and innovators, joined our girls and teachers for a week of hands-on learning, curiosity, laughter, and connection. And the impact is still rippling.

Together, they:
-Led hands-on STEM projects that challenged girls to test, fail, refine, and try again
-Visited classes and clubs, sparking new ideas and confidence
-Played soccer side-by-side with students (because learning happens everywhere)
-Traveled beyond campus to tour homes and the Kibera community, building deeper understanding
-Took a joyful field trip to the Giraffe Centre, reminding us that learning should be expansive and fun
One of the most powerful outcomes of the week? Watching girls step into their voices.

As Madame Josephine, KGSA alum and teacher, shared:“What stood out most was seeing our students confidently engage with hands-on experiments, ask thoughtful questions, and collaborate as young problem-solvers… STEM taught us that every attempt matters.

Jean, one of our STEM volunteers, reflected on that same transformation:“It was a powerful reminder of how experiential STEM learning builds confidence, curiosity, and teamwork—reminding both teachers and students to keep trying, refining, and believing until the results emerge.

For our teachers, this week wasn’t just inspiring, it was affirming:“As teachers, we felt supported, inspired, and motivated to bring this same spirit of inquiry back into our classrooms,” Josephine shared.
That’s the magic of partnership. Learning flowed in every direction.

To our 15 STEM volunteers: thank you for showing up with your expertise, curiosity, and hearts. You helped create moments that the KGSA girls and teachers will carry with them long after the week ended.

This STEM week was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when people show up in person, learn together, and build relationships across cultures. More on that next week. 💛
