Mary’s Story

When Mary first came to the Kibera Girls Soccer Academy (KGSA), she was stepping out of a life that kept her mostly inside her home. Caring for her father, who is blind, meant she spent much of her childhood with limited mobility and very few opportunities to socialize.

Now, as a rising KGSA senior, Mary’s world has “opened in ways I never imagined.”

Because of your support, girls like Mary receive safety, education, friendship, and life-changing opportunities every single day. For Mary, that meant the chance to travel to Zanzibar in June of 2025 with five other KGSA girls for an intercultural exchange program with our longtime partner Pacific Ridge School.

Mary’s first time leaving Kenya, swimming in the ocean, and even flying on an airplane. She blossomed on that trip. Her confidence grew, her laughter came easily, and she shared her ideas boldly with her American travel companions. One teacher described her transformation simply: “Mary lit up every space she entered.” And she truly did.

According to global research, girls with access to safe schooling and strong social support are far more likely to graduate, pursue leadership pathways, and become agents of change in their communities.

Thanks to the 103 families who already donated in December, we surpassed our Giving Tuesday and Board Match Challenges empowering KGSA to serve 140 girls like Mary in 2026!

Wow, just wow! We are so touched by your generosity that will allow more girls like Mary to access the same stability, opportunity, and support she’s received.

If you haven’t made your year end gift YET, there’s still time to join the 101 people who are committed to helping girls like Mary in Kibera. Your generosity is so appreciated – DONATE HERE.

Thank you for believing in what’s possible for KGSA girls.
