Good morning from Zanzibar! It’s such an honor to be here with Director Claris and six KGSA students. Thanks to our new Board Member Germaine Jackson and partnership with Pacific Ridge School (PRS) in Carlsbad, California, we are participating in a service-learning trip with 14 of their students.
It’s been a great cross-cultural experience. Many of the issues that Zanzibar faces are also challenges that Kibera faces – lack of equitable access to education, plastic litter, water shortages…

Every day the 20 students learn, volunteer, and reflect on their experiences.
Here’s some of the fun activities we’ve been doing this week:
- Harvesting seaweed with local mamas·
- Monitoring dolphin populations ·
- Planting mangrove seedlings in coastal wetlands·
- Picking up litter on the beach·
- Learning the Spice Island’s rich history·
- And much more!

What a joy it’s been to see the KGSA girls feel the ocean for the first time and learn about the world. And to witness American teenagers take a break from technology and build new connections.
