She Makes All the Difference

One of the reasons I love working with the Kibera Girls Soccer Academy is their belief in caring for the whole girl.
Earlier this year, the school leadership voiced a need for a school nurse. We listened and Director Claris worked quickly to find the right person for the job.

Meet Ms. Laurine Okeno, a KGSA 2015 graduate and registered nurse from the Kenya Medical Training College, who has been serving 150 girls since July. What a difference she has made!

Before Nurse Laurine arrived, the School Counselor or a teacher would have to accompany each ill girl to the local health clinic, wait to be seen, go to the pharmacy for any needed medicine, and then walk back to KGSA sometimes taking up a whole half day of their time.

But now, girls don’t have to miss school to receive health care! They simply stop by the new nurse’s office to get a check-up and any needed medication. Since Nurse Laurine started in July, ONLY TWO girls during Term 3 had to leave school to visit the local health clinic. Two compared to dozens in past terms.

Wow, just wow, this is what local IMPACT looks like.
