Meet Deizary

Can you imagine not continuing your education after the 8th grade? It’s a heartbreaking reality that too many girls face in Kibera.

Today I want to introduce you to Deizary, a 9th grader at KGSA, who found herself in that very situation a year ago.
For Deizary, life wasn’t easy. During elementary school, her parents couldn’t afford lunch money or books. Her teachers often sent her home for not being prepared. Despite these challenges, she was a good student and dreamed of joining high school. If affording lunch money and school supplies was a problem, imagine her family finding a way to pay high school fees!

Deizary was lucky because one of her family members told her mum about the Kibera Girls Soccer Academy. In January of 2024, Deizary was accepted to KGSA where she is thriving. Her favorite subject is Chemistry, taught by her role model Ms. Dalifa, who is a KGSA alumna.

“I do not want to let the people who support me down. My mother is hustling for my younger brother to go to school and she does not have to worry about my high school fees. That makes me happy, so what reason do I have to also not make anyone who supports KGSA happy? I will do my best and join you in helping girls and making the world a better place.”

-Deizary Akinyi, KGSA Student

Because of your support, the Kibera Girls Soccer Academy was able to offer Deizary a free high school education.  Thanks to you, KGSA educated 150 girls like Deizary this academic year. We couldn’t have done it without you.
What an honor it was to tour the country with KGSA Alumna Asha Jaffar this past month to thank many of you in person.

As always, thank you for providing critical support that girls in Kibera need – you are changing their worlds.
