Can you believe KGSA just finished its second term? Because of your support, a lot has taken shape here at the Kibera Girls Soccer Academy since January, including what’s mentioned in the subject line: serving over 100,000 school meals to our community!
You helped Senior Sylvia, who is excelling in mathematics and recently ranked 4th out of 100 Kiberan girls in a recent academic competition.
You supported Junior Rosemary, who was celebrated as one of the school’s most improved students, scoring a B- on her recent mid-term exams.
You empowered Sophomore Viole, who led the netball team to a 4th place finish in Nairobi County.
We wanted to share a quick look at what you’ve helped make possible – what’s been working, what we’re learning, what’s changed, and what’s ahead. Thank you for being in this with us. None of it happens without you.
What’s new:
- The school’s water project is in phase 2 – installing the pump and solar panels to power it!
- Empowering Young Women Africa partnered with the school to deliver martial arts programming – so cool!
- KGSA has hosted so many international visitors, including some of our first supporters from the Twin Cities who last visited ten years ago.
What’s working:
- The new classrooms are a much-improved learning space for the girls!
What’s evolving:
- We need better ways to encourage girls and staff to read for fun. The KGSA library is a beautiful, peaceful reading and study area stocked with new materials from Books for Africa. We need something like the Book It program from my childhood to get the girls EXCITED about reading.
What we’ve let go:
- We decided to step back from matching up KGSA alumni with specific donors to support their higher education, because it wasn’t working. It created dependence instead of resilience, a key life skill we want every KGSA alumna to achieve.
What’s ahead:
- Working with the school leaders to plan teacher training.
- Term 3 starts at the end of this month – the last preparation before the seniors take their national exams in November.
And as always, we’ll keep sharing what we learn along the way. We’re proud of what’s unfolded and just as committed to the parts still in progress.
Thanks again for being part of this work to educate, inspire, and empower girls in Kibera. Your support shapes how we grow, how we show up, and how we keep learning.
