The Kibera Girls Soccer Academy is a free secondary school for girls living in the Kibera Slums of Nairobi, Kenya.  They provide a free education, athletic opportunities, and a host of extra curricular activities to over 120 girls each year.   Abdul Kassim, The Founder and Executive Director of the school, initially started a soccer program for girls in 2003 as a way to get them off of the streets and engaged in something productive.  He realized soon after, that as powerful as soccer is, it wasn’t enough to combat the pervasive gender inequalities that exist in Kibera.  Only 8% of all girls in Kibera ever have the chance to go to school, but that didn’t stop Abdul.  Through his skills as an organizer, he was able to draw in interested donors to help build one of the first ever free secondary schools in Kibera, and in 2006 enrolled the first 11 girls at the Kibera Girls Soccer Academy.
