The revolution that is happening at KGSA is not only that free high school education is being offered to girls in Kibera. It is not only that, against all odds, KGSA is sending students to university. Every student, every employee, even the neighbors are welcomed unconditionally to the KGSA family. At KGSA, administrators will chase after a girl who gets pregnant and beg her to come back and finish high school. They will pool together rent money for a girl who is orphaned so she will not have to move up-country. They will send teachers back to school after a decade of being out to fulfill their dreams and get them trained.
This is not a school that only invests in students who show enough potential to excel academically and proceed to the next level. Even if she shows up with no pen, paper, desk or uniform, that student is considered family. If she is not capable of or interested in college, she will not be discarded. She will be taught. There is no waiting. There are no exceptions. Her life gets better right now.
KGSA recognizes the multifaceted and interconnected needs of the urban poor. Our free-schooling and after-school programs address the educational inequalities that are present for girls. Our school-to- work program recognizes that not all students are college-bound and works to connect them to employment opportunities in and outside of Nairobi. Our micro-finance and parenting courses help provide a financially stable home for our students to return to that support and love them. Our mentor-mentee program provides our students with female role-models who give counseling and guidance as our students navigate their adolescence. Our meals program guarantees at least one nutritious meal a day. Our Next-Step Scholarship program ensures that our student’s dreams become more than dreams, but realities by providing the necessary financial assistance
